Summerset National Awards | Greenkeeper of the Year | Paul Hickey

September 6, 2026

For more than four decades, Paul Hickey has been a familiar and highly respected figure within New Zealand bowls both on and off the green.

He has been widely acknowledged as one of the best greenkeepers in the Country, and it is fitting that his contribution has been recognised with the Bowls New Zealand Greenkeeper of the Year Award for 2026.

As Head Greenkeeper at Howick Bowling Club, Hickey has played a central role in maintaining the club's reputation as one of Auckland's premier bowls venues.

What makes Hickey's contribution particularly impressive is the combination of experience and dedication he brings to the role.

With more than 40 years involved in greenkeeping, he possesses an extensive understanding of turf management and the unique demands of bowling greens.

Over that time, he has earned widespread respect within the bowling community, including being named Auckland Greenkeeper of the Year on three occasions.

His work extends far beyond routine maintenance.

Successful greenkeeping requires careful planning, technical knowledge, and the ability to respond to changing seasonal and environmental conditions.

Hickey approaches each challenge with professionalism and a commitment to continuous improvement, ensuring that Howick's greens remain among the best in the country.

In addition to his responsibilities at Howick, Hickey willingly shares his knowledge with other clubs throughout eastern Auckland and further afield.

His advice and support have assisted fellow greenkeepers and clubs seeking to improve their own facilities, making a valuable contribution to the wider bowls community.

As is the case with many of the key people in our bowling community, Paul Hickey's contribution is often delivered quietly and without seeking recognition.

Congratulations to Paul Hickey on being named Bowls New Zealand's 2026 Greenkeeper of the Year. This award recognises a lifetime of dedication to the sport and a commitment to excellence that has benefited players, clubs, and competitions for more than 40 years.
