At the discretion of the Chief Technical Official (CTO), Level 1 umpires may also officiate at national events.
There are three types of Level 1 Umpires you can achieve:
You don't need previous umpiring experience—any member of a bowling club in New Zealand can begin training to become an umpire.
You'll work with local tutors in your area to prepare for the exams. Training may include:

Laws of the Sports of Bowls (Crystal Mark Fourth Edition)
New Zealand Domestic Regulations
Scenario-based training to test your understanding
Measuring Module
Use of approved measuring equipment
Practical on-green measuring scenarios
These modules are designed to prepare you for your exams and practical officiating.
When you're ready, you'll sit one or both exams:
Laws Exam
25 questions
Oral, closed-book format
Measuring Exam
15 on-green scenarios
Practical demonstration of measuring skills.
Fees are payable at the time of assessment and vary depending on the accreditation you are seeking. Please refer to the accreditation options above for current fees.
To remain accredited as a Level 1 Umpire, you'll undertake a re-accreditation process every four years in partnership with your local umpires group.
