What does an umpire do?

Umpiring Course Levels

Level 1 Umpire
Club & Community Officiating

The Level 1 Umpire course is the entry point into umpiring and is designed for those new to officiating bowls.

This course focuses on:

  • Understanding the Laws of the Sport

  • Applying the laws in practical game situations

  • Building confidence to officiate at club and community competitions

  • Developing good officiating habits and communication

This is the recommended starting point for aspiring umpires.

Level 2 Umpire
Regional & National Competition

The Level 2 Umpire course is suited to umpires who have experience officiating and are ready to progress to higher levels of competition.

This course focuses on:

  • Advanced interpretation of the Laws of the Sport

  • Consistency in decision-making

  • Officiating at regional and national events

  • Supporting competitive and representative environments

ITOs
International Officiating

ITO courses and appointments are for officials selected to operate in international bowls environments.

This level represents the highest standard of umpiring and focuses on:

  • Elite competition standards

  • International laws and protocols

  • Officiating in high-performance environments

Selection for ITO roles is subject to eligibility and appointment processes.
