After six years of outstanding service to our national programme, Mike Kernaghan has stepped down as Head Coach and Convenor of Selectors for the Blackjacks.
Mike took on the role following an exceptional playing career that concluded in 2020. Since then, he has brought the same passion, dedication, and pursuit of excellence to coaching that made him one of New Zealand's finest bowlers.

During his time as Head Coach, Mike led the Blackjacks at some of our sport's biggest events, including the 2022 Trans Tasman Series, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the 2023 Multi Nations, World Championships and Oceania Championships, the 2024 and 2025 Trans Tasman Series, the 2025 World Cup in Malaysia, and most recently the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Mike also served as Convenor of Selectors from 2024, playing a key role in the identification, development and selection of athletes representing New Zealand on the world stage.
Mike's influence extends far beyond results. He has been a mentor, leader and trusted voice for athletes, selectors and support staff alike, helping shape the culture, standards and professionalism of our high-performance programme. His commitment to the Blackjacks and to New Zealand bowls has left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside him.
On behalf of Bowls New Zealand, we thank Mike for his immense contribution to our sport, both as a world-class player and as Head Coach. Your dedication, knowledge and leadership have helped inspire a generation of athletes and strengthened the Blackjacks programme for years to come.
